Orang Asli (Indigenous) Community Housing 

The competition brief for this project was to design homes that are suited for the Orang Asli communities around Peninsular Malaysia utilising bamboo as the main material. Bamboo was chosen because it is widely available within Orang Asli villages and the local community still retains knowledge and skills to work with bamboo. 

As such, we designed 'CENGKIH' which is modular, flexible and adaptable to a variety of site conditions and family sizes to allow a possibility of future expansion if necessary. The design also takes into consideration the ease of sending materials to off-site road locations as well as ensuring a shallow learning curve for locals to easily build their own homes.
